TSV Tips: DIY Pom Poms Sandals

With summer approaching fast, I was thinking of getting new summer sandals – something fun and colorful. Instead of buying a new pair and inspired by my Instagram feed, I decided to make my own pom poms sandals that will work both for city adventures and exotic getaways. Today, I am excited to share my super simple guide on how to make your own pom poms sandals by using inexpensive and accessible materials.

Ever since Dolce & Gabbana, Aquazurra and other designers featured pom poms in their collections, pom poms have taken high street fashion world by storm.

Dozens of high street fashion brands replicated the trend in various interpretations, adding tassels, charms and beading.

Rather than spending money on a new pair of summer sandals with pom poms, I will show you how you can rework what you already have without spending much.

Materials you will need:

  • Pack of pom poms (I got mine at Hobbycraft)
  • Pack of small poly rubber elastic bands (assorted colors)
  • Thread and needle
  • Pair of scissors
  • Pair of gladiator or strappy flat sandals (I bought mine at H&M on sale so they were inexpensive!)

Method

Start with sewing individual rubber bands to pom poms of the same color. I prepared 10 pom poms per sandal, but you can make less or more depending on how colorful you want yours to be. It doesn’t take long – it took me about half an hour to complete both sets.

Once you finished sewing rubber bands on, you can start attaching them to the shoes. And that’s when the real fun begins! Simply place the rubber band under a shoe lace or strap and then loop it over pulling the pom pom through, securing it on the shoe lace. Spread pom poms evenly throughout the lace or strap.

An that’s it! Simple as that. You can add tassels, sequins, beads or charms depending on your preferences. Just make sure to sew them to the pom poms and not laces. This way you can readjust pom poms as your tighten the laces on your feet. Also, you can change color combinations, depending on what you are wearing, or easily remove pom poms in case you change your mind and want to return to original look. You can reuse these pom poms on different sandals or attach them to the straps of a beach tote or band of a straw hat.

I hope to take these cuties on my next vacation trip. They go perfectly with this new Next mesh top, don’t you think?

Happy DIYing! xx
